The expression is “A collection is formed when the number of objects reaches three.” By that definition, I have many collections. Some are actually useful everyday objects. We have three antique lamps in the living room, spreading needed lighting for the entire area.

The three antiques that hold canes and umbrellas collected over the years include two that were intended to sit by the door as a depository for wet umbrellas when returning home, and dispensing one when the need arrises to face the rain again. The third is a from a private railroad coach car. It formed the base for a commode and features a very decorative egret bird on the side. Rescued from the melting furnace and sitting comfortably in our sunroom, it is filled with collected canes and umbrellas.

But when the point of usefulness passes the actual need, we reach the point of a collection, or may I boldly say, an addiction.

Here is were I enter the confessional. I have a strange addiction to kitchen utensils. It started many years ago while traveling and stopping at antique stores with Wifey in Ohio. I found a very ornate grape shears. Used to cut the stems of a bunch of grapes into little clusters of three or four to add to a cheese and cracker platter for guests to enjoy.

The seller happened to be in her booth and when I asked the price, it became apparent she had no idea what she had, calling it “an odd cutter of some sort, how about $5.00?” And thats the start of my obsession with spoons, forks and knives and other serving pieces.

The latest find looks like a tea spoon but has a “V” shape formed at the front tip. I have searched on-line, paper books and even asked antique dealers that specialize in silverware what its function is, with no explanation.

So the collection or more accurately the obsession continues. Will I add more items, lets only hope the drawer will still close if I do find another odd piece.

No Egrets Antiques & Estate Sales

Nitra In this cold weather, nothing warms the heart faster then an antique show and sale.
That’s what happened in Wausau Wisconsin over the Valentine’s Day weekend. With a vast array of antiques and primitives, the Wausau Antique show proved to be a great success for both the buyers and the sellers.

Located in the gym area of D.C. Everest High School in Scofield WI, the facility is perfect for this event. A great floor area for vendors, well lit, wide isles, with the bonus of great food service and ample parking. And if you need a fix of sports while you have lunch, an indoor hockey game was in progress. What a great school.  Don’t ask how cold it was outside, let me just say how brave all the souls were to walk from their cars to the door, and then lug their acquired treasures back outside.

But I digress. Our hosts and organizers for this event are Audre’ and Ray, the couple that has organized this event for many years, and also stages our next adventure  in De Pere, WI at St. Norbert Collage in March on the 22 & 23rd. 

They are very well organized and their antique shows reflect that attention to detail. We were please to again be selected to participate in their two shows and look forward to De Pere and next years events, and we will watch for you in De Pere on March 22-23.

No Egrets will again set up in a booth at the NL Promotions antique show in West Bend WI, this Saturday & Sunday Jan. 17 & 18th.
Just a short drive north of Milwaukee on US Hwy 45 to Pleasant Valley Rd. and east to the Washington County Fair Park. This event is always top notch for the antique collector with a super array of goods from all over the state and beyond. We always look forward to visiting with our fellow sellers, and the avid collectors that visit our booth.

With the winter antique shows in our area finished for the year, Valerie and I will have some time to shop for some goodies for our own collections and for our customer “Wants”.

With great anticipation we look forward to one of those must see events for antiquaries, the semi annual  30th Star Benefit Antiques Auction on Friday, April 25, 2014 – Saturday, April 26, 2014

Hundreds of treasures, from classic to kitschy, will be available to the highest bidder as the FRIENDS of the Wisconsin Historical Society hold this biennial auction to benefit restoration projects at Black Point Estate in Lake Geneva. The Wisconsin Antiques Dealers Association generously sponsors the 30th Star Benefit Antiques Auction.  The event is held at Old World Wisconsin’s historic Clausing Barn.

Old World Wisconsin is an open-air museum located near Eagle, Wisconsin. Opened in 1976, the museum is owned and operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society. It portrays housing and the daily life of immigrants in 19th century Wisconsin.

We always enjoy this event, it offers an opportunity to see and learn from the great treasures offered for bids, talk to other like minded individuals, and benefit a great cause. And as dealers and collectors, we all are interested in preserving the past for future generations to see and understand the history we hope to preserve and pass on to the next generation of antique collectors.
